Runes by Ednah Walters & Giveaway (INT)

RunesRunes by Ednah Walters
Publication date:  May 20th 2013
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

Synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.

Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.

Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about Torin. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only is she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life.

My View: I had been reading so many rave reviews about this book that I decided to check it out. I have never read a Norse mythology book before and even though it did pique my curiosity, there was very little explanation in the book and that had me pining for more.

The plot was new to me since I have never read much of mythology related books. The love triangle theme is a bit old though. Never mind when you have a guy like Torin to drool at, you tend to let a few things lie. The romance was well done.

The characters are well fitting and there are secrets all around which reveal themselves just a bit at a time teasing. The book has a nice pace albeit a few instances felt repeated and could have gotten rid of.

The book ends on a note where you’re left wanting for more.

Overall, with a missing father, a mysterious neighbor, a loving boyfriend and some kick-ass villains, this book makes sure to carry your interest throughout.

Review & Giveaway (INT): Radiant by Christina Daley

Cambria Hebert

Genre: YA romance with a touch of paranormal/sci-fi

Age: 13+

Blurb: Mary is part Vietnamese. Carter is a complete jerk. Normally, they don’t talk much.

But when Mary’s in an accident on the way to school one morning, Carter nearly dies saving her life. The doctors say his chances of living are slim, and Mary’s feeling the full weight of survivor’s guilt.

However, Carter’s back at school in a matter of days, as if nothing had happened. Although, he is a little “glitchy,” and he’s developed a sudden and intense interest in Mary. She thinks he’s suffering from major brain trauma from the accident. Or that he’s been possessed.

As it so happens, Carter really is possessed. And the thing controlling him is having the time of its life learning to be human.

Featuring a diverse cast of characters, RADIANT is a funny and heartfelt story about being human, being in love, and being healed.

Buy at Amazon

My View: This book made for a quick read. It was a romance with a bit of mystery and sci-fi involved.

The writing is simple and easy to read and understand. The characters are well etched and you can identify with them.

The story is not just about romance, there’s a bit of mystery involved that sparks interest and questions until it is revealed. And even after the revelation, one waits for what will happen next.

The book does make you think on a couple of important issues that get sidelined by our daily busy life. Don’t get me wrong. It’s neither preachy nor a story with a moral. It’s just a book that ends up giving  a lot of important life lessons without even making you feel it did that.download (8)

The plot is new, the story simple and it makes for a good read overall.

3/5 stars – I liked it.

Interview & Giveaway (US): Eileen Goudge, The Replacement Wife

Cambria Hebert

Let’s welcome Eileen Goudge, the author of The Replacement Wife, a book that played havoc with my emotions last year and found a spot on my top 10 books of the year. You can read my review here.

Did you always wanted to be a writer?

Yes! From the time I learned to read & write, I knew I was born to be a storyteller. I wrote my first “bound” book (a notebook, actually) when I was eight years old. A ghost story. I still have it. Not bad for an eight-year-old!

What is that one book or series of your writing which gave you the most satisfaction?

Each one of my novels is close to my heart. My Carson Springs trilogy was the most fun to write because I created a fictional world that I got to live in for 3 books (“Stranger in Paradise, “Taste of Honey” and “Wish Come True.” Many readers wrote to say how they wanted to move to Carson Springs, which is based on the real-life town of Ojai, California. I got the most reader mail for the trilogy than for any of my other novels, I think.

What are your few favorite books?

I first read “Jane Eyre” when I was eleven, and have read it twice since. I never tire of it. The story is timeless and the writing grabs you by the throat. I also love Stephen King’s “The Stand,” which is the best post-apocalyptic novel ever written, in my opinion. The James Herriot books are favorites of mine as well.

Are you working on an

y new book right now? If yes, can you give us a little teaser what it’s about?

I’m currently writing a mystery. A return to my “roots” (the ghost story I wrote when I was eight). It’s so much fun! I love mysteries. Starting with Raymond Chandler and James Cain, whose novels I read as a teenager.

What do you think are the prerequisites of becoming a writer?

I think you have to be a voraci

ous reader. I have been devouring books since the “Dick and Jane” readers that taught me to read in first grade. Also, at the risk of stating the obvious, the first rule in becoming a writer is that you have to, well, write. Every day, even if it’s a diary or journal. I don’t know of any published writers who don’t have stashes of scribblings and/or unpublished manuscripts to show for it.

If not a writer, what would you have been?

I love to bake! That’s what led to the publication of my cookbook “Something Warm From the Oven.” When I’m not at the keyboard, I’m in the kitchen baking a cake, pie, bread or cookies. I have 2 sweet potato pies cooling on my kitchen counter as I write this. It makes for a nice yin

g yang with the writing. They complement each other.

Your best read(s) of 2012?

I adored John Green’s “The Fault in Our Stars.” It made me cry but was ultimately life-affirming. And beautifully written. Never mind it’s a YA novel – it should be read by all ages.

I’m currently reading “Defending Jacob” by William Landay. A real page-turner! Makes you wonder, “What if it were my child?”

Wow! Writer as an eight year old and a voracious reader at 11, Ms. Eileen you’re an inspiration. I get intimidated by Jane Eyre’s sheer volume even now and you read it as an 11 year old! Thank you for being on Reviewing Shelf. It was a pleasure having you here.

Giveaway(US)

Ms. Eileen Goudge is very graciously giving away a paperback copy of The Replacement Wife.

About the Author

Some say writers are born, not made. Personally, I think it’s both: Natural-born talent is basically useless without the persistence to go with it. I was lucky enough to have been blessed with a deep and abiding love of books and writing coupled with an insane stick-to-it-iveness, which, let me tell you, is a double-edged sword (great when carrying on in the face of rejection and hardship; not so great when it comes to relationships that should’ve died an early death).

As I child, I read voraciously–as many books per week as I could carry home in my bike basket. My early writings were inspired by fantasy and mystery (I was a huge fan of Nancy Drew). I won praise from my 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Cherry, for my short story “The Secret of the Mossy Cave,” which is probably what inspired me to become a writer. An aspiration cemented, in high school, when I won third prize in a state-wide poetry competition and took Honorable Mention for another poem, in a nationwide contest.

When I took up writing as a profession, as a young single mom, mostly what I did those first few years was collect rejection slips. However, I persisted and went on to publish 32 novels for young adults (starting with the successful “Sweet Valley High” series), and, to date, 15 novels of women’s fiction, as well as numerous short stories and magazine articles. Also a cookbook, inspired by my passion for baking, titled SOMETHING WARM FROM THE OVEN.

My first adult novel, GARDEN OF LIES, enjoyed many weeks on the “New York Times” bestseller list, both in hardcover and paperback. I can still recall the thrill I felt when I saw it displayed in the window of the Barnes & Noble store on Fifth Avenue, in New York, where I live. As I stood there on the sidewalk looking in, it was a dream come true, the culmination of what I used to envision, in those early, hardscrabble years, as I was sat at my typewriter, on my desk in the kitchen, where it was often a struggle to put food on the table.

My definition of success? Getting up one more time than you fall down.

As for love…I finally found it in the most unlikeliest of all places: when I was home alone. I was being interviewed over the phone by a radio talk show host named Sandy Kenyon, formerly of CNN and now a correspondent for WABC-TV, here in New York City. He sounded so nice that when he asked if he could call back later on, I said, “Sure!” We talked for three hours that night…and every night after that. Six weeks later, when we finally met, sparks flew. We were married in September of 1996, and all these years later we still feel like we’re on our honeymoon.

Happy endings do exist, in life as well as in fiction. You just have to write your own happy ending.

Top Ten Tips for Writers by Patrick W. Carr & Giveaway (INT)

Top Ten Tips for Writers

I’m a little leery of offering my top ten tips. I’m a debut author after all, and I usually find myself in need of writing advice rather than dispensing it. At the risk of being repetitious, I’ll put for the ones that have helped me the most.

1. Just finish the book: I really needed this one. For years I would write three chapters, get stuck, and give up. Then I would start a new book and repeat the process. It’s also possible to get caught in the “endless edit.” Look, it’s never going to be perfect. You can always edit later.

2. Join a writers group: Writing well in isolation is really difficult. Join a group or find a critique partner, but do something where you can get feedback on your work. It’s indispensable.

3. Enter a contest: This can be rough because a contest judge has no reason whatsoever to soften the blow. The first contest I entered, I had one judge basically tell me, “Don’t ever quit your day job.” Wow, did that hurt, but after I got through grieving, I went back and looked, really looked, at what they were saying.

4. Be disciplined: Ooh, I hate this. Discipline in any shape is not my thing. The problem is if I don’t enter my story world every day, I start to forget the details and nuances of it that make it real. If a go a week? Forget it, it will take me days just to get back in the groove.

5. Choose craft over marketing: All the publicity in the world won’t sell a bad book. Of course, as soon as I say that, everyone goes, “Well, what about…?” And they’re right. There are some horrendously bad books (the temptation here to mention some of them by name is almost overwhelming) that have sold well. But, by and large, good books sell well and bad books don’t. Write a good one. Learn your craft.

6. Live a big life: Try everything. Never danced before? Take a lesson or three. Don’t know how it feels to get hit with a practice sword? Find out, but stay away from the head. Ouch. Play music, sing songs, go on hikes. As a writer, it’s your responsibility to take these experiences and breath them onto the page. Nothing is ever wasted. I’ve blown out my knees several times playing sports. I wish I hadn’t , but you can bet my intimate familiarity with pain has made it into my writing.

7. Observe: The writer’s biggest tools are his senses. Life is made up of sights, smells, tastes, sounds, and textures. Bring them all to your writing. I’ve spent a bit of time on farms. I know what cow manure smells like. Just how I know makes for a pretty disgusting story, but the experience, the smell, made it to the first line of my first book.

8. Be ruthless: Your skin must grow as thick as buffalo hide. Find your worst critic and use them to make your writing better. Don’t make excuses for a boring passage. If it bores you, it’s bound to bore your reader. I’m blessed. My editor at Bethany House is wonderfully sweet and supportive, but she works my manuscript with a fine-toothed comb.

9. Know the requirements of your genre: Writing a romance? Great, but if you’re a first time writer, don’t even think about submitting a 200k word manuscript. Don’t keep your heroine and hero apart at the end. Writing a fantasy? Awesome, but once you’ve built the rules for your world, don’t break them. The reader will never forgive you.

10. Read: Read the great stories of your genre. If you love fantasy, then make sure you’ve gone through Tolkien with a fine-toothed comb, not only for what he does better than anyone, but where he could have done better. Romance? Great. Take a couple of turns through “Pride and Prejudice.” These are the rods you will be measured against. No, we’ll probably never get there, but it’s our job to try.

Wow! Thank you so much for stopping by, Reviewing Shelf, Mr. Patrick. They are one of the most simple and practical top ten writing list I have ever seen. Love them. Very resourceful.

Author Patrick W. Carr

Patrick Carr was born on an Air Force base in West Germany at the height of the cold war. He has been told this was not his fault. As an Air Force brat, he experienced a change in locale every three years until his father retired to Tennessee. Patrick saw more of the world on his own through a varied and somewhat eclectic education and work history. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1984 and has worked as a draftsman at a nuclear plant, did design work for the Air Force, worked for a printing company, and consulted as an engineer. Patrick’s day gig for the last five years has been teaching high school math in Nashville, TN. He currently makes his home in Nashville with his wonderfully patient wife, Mary, and four sons he thinks are amazing: Patrick, Connor, Daniel, and Ethan. Sometime in the future he would like to be a jazz pianist. Patrick thinks writing about himself in the third person is kind of weird.

Review & Giveaway (INT): Waiting to Forget by Sheila Kelly Welch

Title: Waiting to forget
Author: Sheila Kelly Welch
Hardcover: 172 pages
Publisher: Namelos
Publishing Date: October 1, 2011
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1608981142

Goodreads Summary: T.J. has always looked out for his little sister, Angela. When Momma used to go out and leave them home alone, he’d lock the door so they’d be safe, keep Angela entertained, and get out the cereal and milk for her. When Momma’s boyfriend got angry at them, he’d try to protect Angela. Later, at their foster homes, T.J. was the only one who knew how to coax his little sister out of her bad moods. The only one who understood why she made origami paper cranes and threw them out the window.

But now T.J. is sitting in the waiting room at the hospital, wondering if Angela, unconscious after a fall, will ever wake up. Wondering, too, if he will ever feel at home with his and Angela’s new parents—Marlene, who insists on calling him Timothy, and Dan, who seems to want a different son.

Going back and forth between Now and Then, weaving the uncertain present with the painful past, T.J.’s story unfolds, and with the unfolding comes a new understanding of how to move forward.

My Views: This book made for a short and interesting read. It took me some time to get into the book because of its different presentation of now, then, and between then and now. But later I adapted to it.

I liked the concept behind the book and could see so many psychological aspects to the characters. I was almost analyzing and diagnosing them as I read.

The story is a bit sad but also a reality for many children. The narrative is told as seen through the eyes of 12 year old T.J. who reminisces his past and alternates between being present in the ‘present’ as he sits in the hospital waiting room. His innocence but also a keen perception of what goes around him is stunning. At times, he is shown ignorant as a 12 year old is but at other times, he is shown thinking like an adult.

There is a line from the book that I really liked – “T.J. tried to imagine what it would be like to have a piece of quiet. He pictured it being pale blue with swirls of mint green.”

Overall, this is a beautiful, heart-touching book and you will end up loving T.J.

3/5 stars – I liked it.
